ABA’s Salt House Wins RIBA Manser Medal

Alison Brooks Architects has just been named as the winner of the 2007 RIBA Manser Medal Award for its experimental Salt House project in Essex. Chosen from a shortlist of RIBA Award winners, the prestigious prize recognises the best one-off, architect-designed house or major extension in the UK, and was presented at the RIBA Stirling Prize Dinner held at the Roundhouse in Camden on 6th October.

Alison Brooks Architects collecting the prizeThe prestigious honour is sponsored by specialist manufacturer the Rooflight Company, and was established in 2001 to acknowledge and reward new and innovative approaches to residential design and technology. It is named after former RIBA President Michael Manser, and was televised live on Channel 4. The London-based practice won the accolade for its ‘floating’ beach house, which was praised by the panel of judges for the ‘breathtaking rigour’ of its design, detailing and execution.

The award was presented by Michael Manser and Val King of the Rooflight Company, along with a cheque for £5000. Val commented: “The vision and creativity displayed by each of the shorlisted projects paints an encouraging picture for the future of home design. We are proud to champion architecture of this calibre, and continue to support design innovation in the residential sector.”

With a long and illustrious background in conservation and heritage projects, the Rooflight Company has built an outstanding reputation for innovation and design quality. Looking towards the future, it is now rapidly expanding its repertoire in contemporary architecture, and has announced that it is to sponsor the award again in 2008 as part of its ongoing commitment towards supporting excellence in architectural design.
